FCO – Change of Level of Advice – Guyana
The FCO travel advice for Guyana has been updated with regards to events on 1 August. The overall level of the advice has changed; the FCO now advise against all travel to the town of Linden and the road south from the town towards the interior as far as Iwokrama. Please find an extract of the advice below.
Travel Summary
We advise against all travel to the town of Linden and the road south as far as Iwokrama, from the town towards the interior. On 18 July 2012 a demonstration in the town ended violently. Three demonstrators were shot dead. Since then the town and surrounding area have experienced civil disturbances; roads in the town have been blocked and vehicles and buildings set alight. The situation remains volatile. There are reports of armed robberies taking place on the road into Linden from the south. Public transport has stopped servicing this stretch of road.
The funerals of those killed in Linden are to be held on 1 August. There will be commemorative ceremonies in Georgetown and in Linden. This is a politically significant day; it is the Emancipation Day public holiday. You should avoid all large gatherings, particularly in times of heightened political tension.
